The Chianti Sculpture Park
Permanent exhibition of contemporary installations and sculptures, born in 2004 from an initiative of the Giadrossi couple, both art lovers.
The main characteristic of the Park is the integration between art and nature. Each artist has visited the forest and has therefore made a specific proposal for the chosen place. The union between the sculptures and the wood, the sounds, the colours and the light is total. In fact, here the work of man does not tend to prevail over nature, but to integrate and enhance it.
Artists from all five continents and different materials have been chosen to give the visitor an overview of the variety and importance of contemporary art in today's world.
An amphitheatre has also been created in the park, offering visitors a packed programme of concerts in July and August.
Pieve di San Giovanni a Pievasciata
The parish church was originally dedicated to Santa Maria ad Sciatam or Ischiatam, it is
one of the oldest in the Chianti area, known since the 11th century. In the thirteenth
century it was in fact on the "hot" border between Siena and Florence and was sacked
by the Florentines. Probably as a result of these events the whole plebano complex was
fortified and still today of those fortifications there are two massive towers. The church
has a single nave plan, with a mighty bell tower that was part of the fortified structures
of the complex. Originally, however, the appearance must have been different. On the
outer wall of the left side are still visible three round arches, now closed, set on square
pillars without decorations and which are the proof that in the past the church had to
have more naves. The structure of the bell tower, originally open with a large arch placed
above the roof of the church, shows quite clearly its military origin. Another military
structure, probably the formwork, is to be identified with the massive construction i ncorporated in the rectory house which shows two-thirteenth-century structures.
